For the first time in Bergen County- Maywood Physical Therapy is providing DOCTOR INSTRUCTED MASSAGES. You will be evaluated by one of our doctors and then you will have a specific myofascial release session with a massage therapist.

At MPT&Rehab, after the functional examination with the doctor they will know precisely how to tackle the hypertonicity and trigger points that are causing you pain. Myofascial release is therapy used to combat somatic dysfunction, which results in pain and also decrease the range of motion in many of your joints.

The approach at MPT&Rehab is completely noninvasive and will effectively help manage your pain. Myofascial pain syndrome is a musculoskeletal disorder that increases hypertonicity and rigidity in muscle tissue, ligaments and the fascia that covers it. These nociceptors that cause pain will also produce both local and referred pain patterns throughout your body.

At MPT&Rehab we address many layers of your myofascial pain syndrome. The doctors post examination will create a plan which will involve correcting posture, ergonomics, and structural support. Also, it will increase your joint stability and fix your misalignments- to help decrease the pain and tightness felt in tissue and muscles.

Treatment at MPT&Rehab will involve our expertise in manual medicine by relaxing contracted muscles and increasing circulation and lymphatic drainage. Also, treatment will help stimulate the stretch reflex of muscles and release the fascial lines.

Manual Release Techniques

- Ability to relax an overactive muscle
- Ability to increase extensibility of a shortened muscle or its associated fascia

Fundamental Principles

Post contraction inhibition- after a muscle is contracted it is automatically relaxed or inhibited for a brief period

Reciprocal Inhibition- when one muscle is contracted, its antagonist is automatically inhibited, (example) contraction of quads inhibits hamstrings

Length changes in muscle may be caused by neuromuscular or connective tissue factors- often a muscle has a decreased length but only needs to be relaxed; rather than stretched, to return to normal
